Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is derived from my formal studies in music education, my own experiences as a student and a teacher, the testimonials of many other music students about their own musical journey, and much more.
Every musician and student is different. Students will have greater success discovering their own musical personas with the help of the instructor rather than adhering to a singular teaching dogma.
That being said, there are important principles which I adhere to for every student.
Healthy and Comfortable Playing
-
Practicing and performing should feel comfortable and rewarding.
-
There are principles of proper form which maximize comfort, effectiveness, and productivity.
Challenging and Interesting Assignments
-
Students can expect consistent, steady improvement in their music making given ample consistency with practicing and lessons.
-
Students can also expect challenging, interesting repertoire suggestions from myself and can expect to have a say in their repertoire choices.
Emphasis on Musical Fundamentals
-
My thorough training in musical fundamentals such as music theory, ear training, counterpoint, performance techniques, practice techniques, rehearsal techniques, audition strategies, deep listening, breathing exercises, and many others serve as the basis of my musical instruction.
Meaningful Dialogue between Teacher and Student
-
It is of vital importance to me that there is an ongoing dialogue between student and teacher during the lesson, and outside of the lesson when helpful.
-
Students are allowed and encouraged to share their reactions to their progress and challenges.
Performance Opportunities
-
Studio recitals, studio classes, competitions, auditions, and many other high-level performance opportunities will be made available to each student based on their own goals and interests.
-
Studio classes are an optional, weekly gathering of the studio for the purpose of performing lesson repertoire in front of an audience of flute players. Studio classes are lead by the teacher, however the entire studio is encouraged to give constructive feedback to the performers. Studio class is offered free of charge to all students.
Supplementary Material
-
Sheet music, method books, and other lesson materials will be provided by the teacher.
-
There is a vast array of music resources online such as masterclasses, performances, lectures, and endless more. Students can expect a consistent supply of recommendations to these resources as they are pertinent to the lesson material.
